IF AND WHEN THE SHTF. . .

I PRAY that a SHTF* scenario doesn't happen...or if it does, that doesn't happen for a very long time.

As such, it pays to be prepared, so here are a few things to have on hand:

WATER, AND LOTS OF IT. Water is needed for most of the items below:
1. Rice - 20 lbs
2. Beans - 20 Cans or 20 lbs (dried)
3. Canned Meat - 20 Cans
4. Canned Fruit - 20 cans
5. Canned Veggies - 20+ cans (green beans, corn, tomatoes)
6. Soup, dried vegetables, boullion (powder or cubes) - 20+ cans
7. Powdered Milk - put in air tight cannister, don't leave in cardboard box
8. Cereal - skip the fluffy marshmallow junk for something more substantial like Raisin Bran
9. Oatmeal - 5 lbs
10. Peanut Butter - couple of large jars
11. Pancake mix - 10 lbs
12. Honey, Jam, Syrup, dried fruit - few lbs
13. Pasta - 20lbs (but remember, pasta uses a LOT of water, and the leftover water is not potable
      and will spoil quickly)
14. Spaghetti sauce or canned tomatoes - 10 Jars
15. Salt - a few cannisters - salt is cheap, and useful for more than just flavoring food
16. Oil - olive, cooking, and food grade mineral oil
17. Coffee & Tea - unground beans keep better, but require a grinder. If no electricity, no coffee!
18. Dried spices and prepackaged individual condiments (ketchup, mustard, mayo)
19. Nuts - quick and easy
20. Packaged meals - (mac & cheese) to keep the kids happy
21. Dried eggs, textured vegetable protein, nutritional yeast
Bonus - have a garden!

Non-food items:
  • Tupperware style items with tight lids
  • Glass jars and cannisters with tight fitting lids
  • Bleach to sanitize your water supply if needed
  • Soap - a good multipurpose liquid soap (like Dr. Bronner's) is best
  • Matches (waterproof if possible) and fire starter items (paper, bits of wood, egg cartons)
  • Permanent markers - to mark cans in case labels fall off
  • Hunt down an old fashioned coffee grinder in thrift stores for grinding coffee beans and spices!
